The Veeam vCloud Self-Service portal (from here on, just portal) is a great solution for offereing self-service capabilities to vCloud Director tenants that want to manage by themselves backups and restores of their VMs and vApps. Service providers can already configure the service to allow tenants for different degrees of freedom, but there are some additional options that are not available in the configuration options.
I already blogged a few months ago about how to “Disable Items Restore options in Veeam Self-Service Backup Portal”, so that the ITEM tab can be completely removed from the interface. And looking at the number of visit this page has had so far, seems like several providers are alreday leveraging this “trick”.
Today however, we want to go a little bit further, and allow tenants to only download their files.

Use vCloud Director LDAP authentication with Veeam self-service portal
I got this request from a colleague, who was helping out a service provider with this scenario: vCloud Director is using an external LDAP service, coming from a local Microsoft Active Directory, to authenticate all vCD users. Is Veeam vCloud Director Self-Service portal able to use this authentication and allow those users to use the portal? Let’s find out (hint: yes it works!).
Disable Items Restore options in Veeam Self-Service Backup Portal
Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 has introduced a complete set of self-service capabilities for VMware vCloud Director users. Service providers can offer these features to their users, and users can perform backups and restores in a complete self-service way.
However, because of network restrictions that are often in place in vCloud Director environments, some features like Item restores are not possible. So, some service providers asked me if it was possible to remove the ITEMS tab in the portal, just to make the user experience of the portal easier. Or maybe a provider doesn’t want to offer these capabilities at all to its customers. Whatever is the use case, there’s a way to remove the tab. Just remember, this is totally unsupported!
Concurrent Linux file restores in Veeam Backup and Replication v9.5 vCloud Director Self-Service Portal
The new vCloud Director Self-Service Portal in Veeam Backup & Replication 9.5 allows tenant to perform backups and restores in a complete self-service mode. To execute file level restores for non-Microsoft file systems, a Multi-OS FLR Helper Appliance virtual appliance is used. This appliance is configured by a Veeam administrator before it can be used for any file restore, and you can learn in this post how to configure it to be deployed multiple times and allow multiple concurrent file restores.
